King Fahad Shipyard Receives Largest Vessel in its History

The King Fahad Shipyard, King Abdulaziz Port’s in-house vessel repair facility, received its largest vessel in its history, the mega container MSC ALIZEE III, for necessary maintenance and modification, according to the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani).

The King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam can service the said vessel because of its “supreme operating capabilities” and 360-degree modernization of its infrastructure while the ship owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has a length of 208.3 meters and a width of 30 meters with its draft measuring 7.4 meters deep.

As one of the main logistics hubs on the Arabian Gulf coast, the King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam boasts high operational capabilities and 43 berths with a capacity of 105 million tons, enabling it to receive a number of the largest vessels and cargo.

In addition to this, with the guidance of the port administration as well as the expertise of shipyard operator Al-Blagha Industrial Co, the MSC ALIZEE III underwent multiple steps of repair work, with its cargo hold, generators, cranes, and navigation systems being fixed in the initial stage.

Also, about 100 tons of steel plates in the hull are being replaced. The ship will also be repainted in the subsequent stage.

Meanwhile, the King Fahad Shipyard, which was set up in 1982, also received in November 2021 the bulk carrier African Jacana that had a carrying capacity of 17,000 tons and a length of 200 meters.

Furthermore, the King Abdulaziz Port is expected to soon be the home to three modern quay cranes following a deal with Saudi Global Ports (SGP) and Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company (ZPMC) under Mawani’s supervision to manufacture the cargo handling equipment.

The additional equipment will contribute to the port’s accommodation of giant vessels as well as boost its credentials as a major trade hub on the Arabian Gulf coast.
