Maersk's New Cold Storage Facility in Saudi

A. P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk), a leading global integrator of container transportation and Refad Real Estate, inked a contract for the management of a brand-new cold storage facility at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Maersk will allow consumers access to the facility in March 2023.

Multiple benefits stem from Dammam's advantageous position. For example, several food processing businesses around King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. These businesses are located in various industrial zones and residential areas.

Because of its vital road and rail connections to the hinterland, the port is a popular choice for placement.

The second-largest port for refrigerated containers in Saudi Arabia will have a cold storage facility measuring 13,300 square meters that can accommodate 8,000 FFEs (Forty Feet Equivalent containers) and 168,000 pallet positions yearly.

The facility's primary purpose will be to accommodate the need to store frozen goods such as meat, poultry, vegetables, confections, and processed foods. Additionally, refrigerated cargo, including dairy products and fresh fruit, will be stored there.

The facility will have state-of-the-art temperature and humidity control systems to guarantee top-notch service quality. Thanks to this technology, there should be little to no food waste while it is being stored at the facility.

Moreover, the clients will have total visibility into these factors, resulting in reliable and transparent operations.

The event was graced by His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Chairman of the Authority's Board of Directors, His Excellency Mr. Omar bin Tala Hariri, President of the Saudi Ports Authority, Mr. Mohammad Shihab, Managing Director of Maersk Saudi Arabia, and Sheikh Abdulaziz Abdelhadi Al-Qahtani, Chairman of the Board of Al Qahtani.

Abdelhadi Abdulaziz Al Qahtani, group director of real estate for Refad Real Estate, and Mohamed Sedeek Hashish, director of products and services for Maersk Saudi Arabia, signed the contract.

“Saudi Arabia is a significant market for us. With more than a fifth of the country’s food imports coming through King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, we wanted to establish a state-of-the-art cold storage facility that will help us serve the food industry better”, said Maersk Saudi Arabia Manager Director Mohammad Shihab during the signing ceremony.

“Our ambition is to connect and simplify our customers’ supply chains. To achieve this, we must be close to our customers, collaborate with trusted and reliable partners and build a network that truly enables global trade. With our new facility in Dammam, we are setting ourselves up to achieve all three goals,” he added.
