Starlink Trial to Improve Ship-Shore Communication

The Starlink trial conducted by NYK in December 2022 showed good results.

The Japanese shipping company NYK conducted a trial using Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SpaceX)-operated satellite communication service Starlink on a ship managed by NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd in December 2022.

The trials were conducted on container vessels and yielded promising results.

According to NYK, the test resulted in a “significantly higher transmission speeds than previously available along the North American continental coast.”

The company said that the NYK Group will continue to work with partners in the aims of creating maritime innovations by “promoting higher ship-shore communication speeds and taking thorough measures to address cyber risks.”

According to the organization, it aims to keep and improve seafarers' motivation to work by expanding their benefits and facilitating communication between them and their families and friends at home.

Additionally, videoconferencing between land and vessels facilitates conventional business communication by replacing email and telephone calls.

By providing real-time onshore support in cases of equipment malfunction or trouble, or remote medical treatment for seafarers, videoconferencing contributes to safe operations.

NYK emphasized that introducing the Starlink service will “enable them to realize the autonomous navigation technology we are currently working on, share weather and marine weather information between vessels and land in the sea area they sail through, and further promote DX onboard operations.”

In relation to this, the company released in February 2021 the “NYK Group ESG Story” that aims to “further integrate [Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG)] into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through business activities.”

Meanwhile, in March 2022, NYK updated the ESG Group Story that “introduces initiatives for integrating ESG into the group’s management strategies” and “provide a partial explanation of the Group’s sustainable growth strategy from a long-term perspective.”

NYK is a shipping company based in Japan. About 800 ships are part of the company's fleet, that includes container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, RoRo car carriers, reefer vessels, LNG carriers, and cruise ships.

Starlink is a satellite communication system operated by SpaceX. It provides satellite internet access coverage to 45 countries since its launch in 2019.
