Wilhelmshaven Terminal Receives 1st Full LNG Cargo

Energy company Uniper delivered Germany’s first full cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the new LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven on Jan. 3.

The new terminal operated by Uniper received the LNG ship Maria Energy which is owned by Tsakos Energy Navigation and was loaded at the LNG supplier Venture Global liquefaction facility Calcasieu Pass, LLC, in Calcasieu Pass, US on Dec. 19, 2022.

The LNG vessel, Maria Energy, is said to be “fully loaded” with approximately 170,000 cubic meters of LNG or 97,147,000 cubic meters of natural gas. The amount is enough to provide energy to around 50,000 German households for a year.

Uniper mentioned that the LNG cargo delivered onboard the vessel “forms part of the commissioning process at the Wilhelmshaven terminal.” It added that the commercial operations in the terminal are expected to begin in mid-January.

According to Uniper CCO Niek den Hollander, the successful delivery is a “testament to the strong partnership of the three mentioned parties.

“The successful delivery of the first full LNG cargo to the Uniper terminal in Wilhelmshaven is a testament to the strong partnership between Uniper, Venture Global, and Tsakos Energy Navigation.”

Hollander noted that the use of LNG as a reliable source of energy is “crucial for the Security of Supply for Germany and Europe.”

“The use of LNG as a reliable energy source is crucial for the Security of Supply for Germany and Europe. We are committed to contribute our part by bringing more LNG to the European market and especially Germany via the Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel Regas Terminals.”

Furthermore, Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel expressed pride toward the company’s huge participation in the event.

“Venture Global is very proud to supply the first full cargo of LNG ever delivered to Germany, and we congratulate Uniper and the German government for their swift action to build the infrastructure needed to make this historic day possible.”

“As strategic partners, we look forward to providing long-term security of energy supply to our allies through the continued delivery of clean and reliable US LNG,” Sabel added.

The Uniper terminal in Wilhelmshaven officially opened on Dec. 17, 2022.
