Accommodation barges provide offshore living and support facilities for personnel working on nearby platforms or marine projects. These vessels require a coordinated team of maritime professionals to ensure safe operation, comfort, and efficient onboard services. Working aboard an accommodation barge involves a blend of marine and hospitality functions, supporting both vessel operations and the needs of temporary offshore residents. Candidates should be experienced with barge or offshore support environments, and hold valid STCW certifications relevant to their position.
Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):
Master / Barge Captain
- Overall command of the vessel and responsibility for safe navigation, mooring, and station keeping.
- Ensure full compliance with maritime regulations and client requirements.
- Lead emergency response and safety drills; maintain onboard discipline and standards.
- Liaise with charterers, platform representatives, and port authorities.
Chief Officer / Barge Supervisor
- Assist the Master with deck operations, including mooring and gangway management.
- Coordinate logistics and deck crew activities, including cargo and personnel transfer.
- Oversee safety equipment checks, lifeboat readiness, and permit-to-work systems.
- Serve as Safety Officer and lead toolbox talks and hazard assessments.
Second / Third Officer
- Perform navigational watch duties if the barge is self-propelled or assist in DP station keeping.
- Maintain navigational equipment, charts, and publications.
- Assist with gangway control and personnel tracking systems.
- Support emergency preparedness and monitor vessel security.
Chief Engineer
- Oversee operation and maintenance of main and auxiliary machinery, power generation, HVAC, and sewage systems.
- Manage engine room personnel and ensure planned maintenance is carried out.
- Monitor fuel, oil, and spare parts inventory and requisition supplies as needed.
- Ensure compliance with pollution prevention measures and technical reporting.
Second / Third Engineer
- Support engine room operations, watchkeeping, and machinery maintenance.
- Maintain pumps, compressors, generators, and fuel systems.
- Assist in troubleshooting and emergency response for technical failures.
- Record equipment parameters and perform daily engine room rounds.
Electrician / ETO
- Maintain electrical power systems, lighting, and safety circuits across the barge.
- Perform diagnostics and repair on HVAC units, refrigeration, and galley equipment.
- Monitor UPS, battery banks, and emergency systems.
- Assist with communications and entertainment systems for accommodation areas.
Deck Crew (Bosun, ABs, OSs)
- Carry out mooring, rigging, lifting, and gangway operations.
- Maintain deck equipment, accommodation superstructure, and safety gear.
- Support housekeeping and hygiene standards in common areas when required.
- Assist in emergency duties, lifeboat handling, and fire drills.
Engine Room Ratings (Oilers, Wipers)
- Support engineers with routine maintenance, oil checks, and machinery cleaning.
- Monitor tanks, bilges, and sump levels; report abnormalities to watch officer.
- Assist in bunkering, sewage treatment, and waste oil management.
- Maintain cleanliness of machinery spaces and tools.
Crane Operators
- Operate offshore cranes for cargo, equipment, and personnel basket transfers.
- Perform daily equipment checks and ensure safe load handling practices.
- Coordinate lifting operations with deck team and platform counterparts.
- Record lifting logs and report defects or unsafe conditions immediately.
Catering & Housekeeping Crew (Campboss, Chief Cook, Stewards, Cleaners)
- Prepare and serve meals, ensuring hygiene and dietary compliance for large offshore crews.
- Maintain cleanliness of cabins, mess rooms, galley, laundry, and common areas.
- Monitor stock levels of provisions and cleaning materials.
- Enforce sanitation, food safety, and housekeeping standards throughout accommodation blocks.
