Asphalt/bitumen tankers are specialized vessels designed to carry cargoes that require high-temperature maintenance and dedicated thermal systems. These vessels demand experienced seafarers who understand the complexities of handling heated cargo, maintaining thermal insulation, and operating under strict safety and environmental protocols. Crew members are expected to adhere to international regulations (MARPOL, SOLAS, ISGOTT), ensure the integrity of high-temperature cargo operations, and maintain the vessel’s performance throughout global trade routes.

Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):

Master

• Overall command and legal responsibility for the safe navigation, cargo carriage, and compliance of the vessel.
• Liaise with charterers, cargo terminals, port state control, and company management.
• Oversee compliance with safety management systems (ISM), ballast water management, and MARPOL requirements.
• Lead emergency preparedness and ensure the crew is trained in handling high-temperature cargo risks.

Chief Officer

• Responsible for planning and supervising cargo operations, including loading, heating, transport, and discharging of bitumen.
• Monitor cargo temperatures, insulation integrity, and heating coil operations.
• Manage cargo documentation, stability calculations, and tank condition reporting.
• Oversee deck crew, safety drills, and maintenance of firefighting and anti-pollution equipment.

Second Officer

• Maintain navigational charts, ECDIS updates, and voyage planning.
• Stand navigational watch; assist in maneuvering and berthing operations.
• Monitor GMDSS communications and safety systems.
• Support Chief Officer in cargo watchkeeping, logkeeping, and compliance tasks.

Third Officer

• Assist in safety equipment checks, lifeboat maintenance, and LSA/FFA readiness.
• Perform navigational watchkeeping duties and bridge equipment monitoring.
• Participate in mooring operations and cargo temperature observations.
• Maintain records of drills, inspections, and security patrols.

Chief Engineer

• Supervise operation and maintenance of main engine, auxiliary machinery, and thermal oil heating systems essential for bitumen transport.
• Oversee boiler systems, heating coils, cargo pipe tracing, and temperature control units.
• Maintain compliance with pollution prevention and engine logbook requirements.
• Manage engine department crew, technical documentation, and spare parts inventory.

Second Engineer

• Perform daily engine room operations, including boiler management and monitoring of cargo heating systems.
• Conduct maintenance on pumps, compressors, generators, and fuel systems.
• Monitor and log critical temperatures and pressures, especially related to cargo heating.
• Assist Chief Engineer with work planning and inspections.

Third Engineer

• Support the operation of auxiliary engines, thermal systems, and cargo-related machinery.
• Conduct scheduled maintenance and assist in diagnostics and repairs.
• Keep records of boiler performance, fuel usage, and machinery parameters.
• Participate in drills and emergency response readiness.

Electrician / ETO

• Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems for propulsion, lighting, and cargo heating control.
• Monitor and service automation systems related to cargo temperature regulation.
• Ensure safety of electrical installations, UPS systems, and alarm monitoring circuits.
• Assist with control panel operations and integration of boiler and heating unit software.

Pumpman

• Operate and maintain cargo pumps, valves, heating coils, and tank stripping systems.
• Conduct line flushing, pressure testing, and leak detection during cargo operations.
• Monitor tank temperatures and adjust heating as needed to maintain fluidity of cargo.
• Perform cleaning of tanks and piping systems in accordance with safety procedures.

Deck Crew (Bosun, ABs, OSs)

• Execute mooring, maintenance, and deck operations under officer supervision.
• Assist with cargo hose handling, tank inspections, and deck pipeline integrity checks.
• Carry out chipping, painting, and upkeep of deck structures and cargo areas.
• Participate in fire drills, oil spill response training, and safety rounds.

Engine Ratings (Oilers, Wipers)

• Support engineers with machinery operations, fuel transfer, and engine room upkeep.
• Monitor lubrication systems, record parameters, and conduct filter cleaning.
• Assist in bunkering operations and engine maintenance routines.
• Keep machinery spaces clean and safe, reporting anomalies promptly.
