Martide’s partners are looking for motivated and eager Engine Assistants to join the engineering teams aboard their vessels. This entry-level role is designed to provide hands-on training and practical experience in shipboard mechanical systems, engine operations, and technical maintenance. As an Engine Assistant, you will work closely with experienced engineers, gaining valuable skills and knowledge that serve as a pathway toward becoming a certified Marine Engineer.

Key responsibilities generally include:

• Assist Engineering Officers in the operation, maintenance, and repair of main engines, auxiliary engines, pumps, and other machinery.
• Carry out routine cleaning and housekeeping duties in the engine room, including wiping down equipment and mopping oil or water spills.
• Monitor fuel, lubricating oil, and coolant levels; assist in refueling and oil change procedures as directed.
• Support engine room watchkeeping by recording temperatures, pressures, and equipment status under supervision.
• Clean and prepare tools, engine components, and workspaces for ongoing maintenance and repair tasks.
• Follow instructions for the safe use of machinery, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Assist with emergency response drills involving fire, flooding, and machinery failure scenarios.
• Report any malfunctions, leaks, or unsafe conditions promptly to the duty Engineer.
• Comply with safety, health, and environmental regulations, including MARPOL and company-specific policies.
• Participate in onboard training and competency development to progress toward higher engineering certifications.
