Pilot boats are small, powerful vessels designed to transfer marine pilots between ships and shore facilities, often in challenging sea and weather conditions. These vessels play a vital role in port operations by enabling safe navigation for incoming and outgoing vessels. Operating year-round, often on a 24/7 basis, pilot boats require experienced and dependable crew to ensure the safety of pilots, maintain vessel readiness, and operate efficiently under tight schedules and adverse conditions.

  • Command and safely operate the pilot boat during all transfers, transits, and standby periods.
  • Navigate in restricted waters, often during night operations, low visibility, or rough sea states.
  • Execute safe approaches to and departures from moving vessels, ensuring pilot embarkation/disembarkation is secure.
  • Maintain radio communication with port control, pilots, and harbor authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with local maritime regulations, port safety procedures, and company SOPs.
  • Conduct pre-departure checks and lead emergency response procedures (man-overboard, collision, etc.).

Mate / Deck Officer (if carried)

  • Assist the Coxswain in navigation, radar use, and pilot boarding maneuvers.
  • Take command when required and ensure continuity of safety practices.
  • Monitor safety equipment, conduct passenger briefings, and manage communications with inbound/outbound vessels.

Deckhand / Boatman / Line Handler

  • Assist with pilot boarding and retrieval operations by operating manropes, fenders, ladders, and safety gear.
  • Secure pilot boarding areas and support safe access to pilot ladders or platforms.
  • Perform lookout duties, mooring tasks, and emergency response actions.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning of deck equipment, rails, and hull.
  • Support refueling, engine checks, and basic repair tasks under supervision.

Engineer (if carried, typically on larger pilot boats)

  • Maintain propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and steering/hydraulic systems.
  • Perform engine diagnostics, oil/fuel checks, and minor mechanical repairs.
  • Ensure vessel is operationally ready for 24/7 deployment.
  • Record engine logs and assist in fuel bunkering.

Common Responsibilities for All Crew

  • Adhere to safety procedures, use PPE, and participate in drills and refresher training.
  • Ensure the vessel is clean, seaworthy, and stocked with required equipment (e.g. lifejackets, radios, first aid kits).
