Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) play a vital role in supporting offshore oil and gas operations by transporting supplies, equipment, and personnel to and from drilling platforms and production sites. Working aboard a PSV requires strong teamwork, safety awareness, and the ability to adapt to dynamic offshore environments. Crew members are expected to uphold high standards of operational efficiency, seamanship, and maintenance, ensuring the vessel operates safely and meets client and regulatory expectations. Below are the typical positions and general responsibilities for each rank aboard a PSV.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Master (Captain)

• Overall command of the vessel and responsible for crew safety and vessel operations
• Ensure compliance with international maritime laws and company policies
• Maintain contact with offshore installations and onshore operations teams
• Supervise all navigational planning and ship movements
• Oversee emergency procedures and crew drills
• Represent the vessel during inspections, audits, and client interactions

Chief Officer (Chief Mate)

• Second-in-command and responsible for deck department operations
• Manage cargo loading and discharge operations, including deck cargo and liquid mud
• Supervise maintenance of deck equipment and safety gear
• Maintain vessel stability, ballast operations, and tank soundings
• Lead safety inspections and crew training on deck procedures
• Act as Safety Officer onboard

Second Officer (2nd Mate)

• Responsible for navigation planning and bridge watchkeeping
• Maintain and update charts, publications, and navigational equipment
• Assist with cargo operations and deck maintenance
• Stand bridge watch and monitor vessel traffic and weather conditions
• Support emergency response procedures and drills

Third Officer (3rd Mate) (if applicable)

• Support bridge operations and assist senior officers as required
• Monitor safety equipment and assist with drills and safety checks
• Contribute to cargo and deck operations as assigned
• Stand navigational or deck watch

Chief Engineer

• Head of the engine department, responsible for all mechanical systems onboard
• Manage and maintain propulsion systems, generators, and auxiliary machinery
• Oversee planned maintenance system (PMS) and spare parts inventory
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations (e.g. MARPOL)
• Supervise engine room staff and coordinate repairs

Second Engineer

• Assist Chief Engineer with daily operations and machinery maintenance
• Responsible for watchkeeping and troubleshooting machinery issues
• Oversee auxiliary systems such as HVAC, bilge, ballast, and fuel systems
• Recordkeeping and reporting in engine logs

Third Engineer

• Support second and chief engineers in routine maintenance
• Stand engine room watch and monitor systems
• Maintain pumps, compressors, and other auxiliary systems
• Assist in bunkering and fuel transfers

Deck Ratings (Able Seaman, Ordinary Seaman, Bosun)

• Perform deck maintenance including painting, greasing, and mooring
• Assist in cargo handling operations on the main deck
• Stand lookout and perform navigation watch duties
• Operate deck machinery such as cranes and winches
• Handle mooring lines during port arrivals and departures

Engine Ratings (Motorman, Oiler, Wiper)

• Assist engineers in maintenance and repair of machinery
• Monitor engine room systems and fluid levels
• Clean engine room spaces and perform general upkeep
• Support bunkering and fuel transfer operations

Cook / Steward

• Prepare meals for crew, catering to dietary and cultural preferences
• Maintain cleanliness of galley and mess areas
• Manage food inventory, provisioning, and hygiene standards
• Assist with housekeeping duties as required
