Seismic vessels play a critical role in offshore geophysical exploration by collecting and processing seismic data used to map sub-seabed structures. These vessels deploy specialized equipment such as airguns and hydrophone streamers to collect acoustic data. Operations require a blend of maritime crew and scientific/technical personnel working together in a high-precision, data-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Master (Captain)

• Overall command of the vessel, personnel, and onboard safety
• Ensures safe navigation and compliance with international and company regulations
• Coordinates with seismic crew leads, client representatives, and shore operations
• Oversees vessel positioning for seismic line acquisition
• Leads emergency preparedness and drills

Chief Officer (Chief Mate)

• Responsible for deck operations and cargo handling
• Supervises deployment and retrieval of seismic gear (streamers, airguns, buoys)
• Ensures vessel stability, ballast operations, and mooring
• Manages deck crew and safety equipment inspections
• Participates in operations planning with seismic department

Second Officer (2nd Mate)

• Performs voyage planning and maintains navigational charts and systems
• Stands bridge watch and monitors vessel traffic and weather
• Assists with seismic line changes and dynamic maneuvering
• Supports safety drills and emergency response duties

Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) (if vessel is DP-equipped)

• Operates and monitors the Dynamic Positioning system during seismic operations
• Maintains vessel position and heading in tight tolerances during data acquisition
• Coordinates with the seismic crew to align with survey line requirements
• Logs and reports vessel positioning, weather, and system performance

Chief Engineer

• Manages all mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems
• Ensures reliable operation of winches, compressors, and hydraulic handling systems
• Maintains maintenance schedules and spare parts inventory
• Supervises engineering crew and liaises with seismic technicians for power needs
• Ensures environmental compliance and MARPOL standards

Second Engineer

• Assists in maintenance and troubleshooting of critical engine systems
• Conducts regular machinery inspections and routine servicing
• Monitors performance of generators, fuel systems, and air compressors (especially those used for airgun arrays)
• Supports bunkering and waste management procedures

Third Engineer / ETO (Electro-Technical Officer)

• Maintains electrical and electronic systems including power distribution
• Supports seismic equipment requiring electrical inputs and controls
• Oversees lighting, alarms, and bridge electronics
• Assists in maintaining seismic lab power, networking, and communications

Deck Ratings (Bosun, AB, OS)

• Deploy and recover seismic gear (streamers, tail buoys, airguns, etc.)
• Operate winches, cranes, and cable handling systems
• Maintain deck equipment and ensure secure lashing of equipment
• Stand watch and assist in mooring, painting, and maintenance duties

Engine Ratings (Motorman, Oiler, Wiper)

• Support engineers with machinery operation and routine maintenance
• Monitor gauges and machinery performance during operations
• Clean and maintain engine room and assist with repairs as needed

Seismic & Technical Personnel

These roles are often staffed by geophysical or technical specialists working for seismic contractors or clients.

Party Chief (Seismic Operations Supervisor)

• Oversees the entire seismic operation and manages seismic crew
• Coordinates with the vessel Master, client representatives, and shore-based teams
• Ensures adherence to survey plan, data quality, and safety procedures
• Leads daily briefings and operational planning

Seismic Observer / Acquisition Technician

• Monitors and operates seismic data recording and acquisition systems
• Ensures real-time data quality and performs troubleshooting during operations
• Configures equipment settings based on survey requirements
• Coordinates closely with the navigation and deployment teams

Navigator / Positioning Engineer

• Manages survey line positioning and vessel track alignment
• Operates and maintains GPS, USBL, acoustic, and gyrocompass systems
• Ensures streamer, gun, and buoy positions are accurately tracked
• Interfaces with the bridge team to guide maneuvering and line changes

Source Technician / Gun Mechanic

• Maintains and operates the airgun arrays used to generate seismic pulses
• Handles compressors, pressure systems, and synchronization equipment
• Troubleshoots leaks, timing faults, or signal issues
• Monitors array performance during survey operations

Streamer / Back Deck Technician

• Handles deployment, repair, and retrieval of streamer cables
• Monitors for streamer damage, noise, and fault indicators
• Installs bird devices, depth controllers, and tail buoys
• Performs cable splicing and tests hydrophone performance

Data Processor / QC Analyst (for some vessels)

• Conducts preliminary seismic data processing and quality control
• Reviews real-time data for anomalies and signal strength
• Reports data status to the Party Chief and client reps
• Transfers data to shore in line with project requirements

Client Representative / Company Man (not vessel crew but onboard)

• Oversees execution of the seismic project on behalf of the client
• Approves acquisition methods, data quality, and operational decisions
• Coordinates reporting, safety audits, and project deliverables

Catering Crew (Cook, Steward)

• Prepares meals for all crew and maintains hygiene standards
• Oversees galley supplies, food storage, and mess cleanliness
• Provides cleaning and laundry services for accommodations
