Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and technically skilled Second Engineers to join their engineering teams aboard various merchant ships. The Second Engineer is a senior member of the engine department, responsible for overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of shipboard machinery and technical systems. Working under the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer plays a key role in maintaining engine room operations, ensuring vessel efficiency, and supporting compliance with maritime safety and environmental regulations.

Key responsibilities generally include:

• Machinery Operation & Supervision: Oversee the operation and performance of main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, boilers, and propulsion systems, ensuring continuous functionality.
• Maintenance & Repairs: Lead the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, ensuring minimal downtime and system reliability.
• Preventive Maintenance Planning: Implement and manage preventive maintenance schedules in line with the ship’s Planned Maintenance System (PMS) to prevent equipment failures and ensure operational readiness.
• Fuel & Lubrication Management: Monitor fuel and lubrication systems, including the handling, treatment, and transfer of fuel, to ensure efficient usage and regulatory compliance.
• Emergency Response & Crisis Management: Act as a key member of the emergency response team, supporting fire-fighting, flood control, and other emergency actions in the engine room.
• Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and shipboard health, safety, and environmental standards.
• Spare Parts & Inventory Control: Oversee the inventory of spare parts, consumables, and critical equipment, ensuring timely procurement and availability of essential items.
• Team Leadership & Training: Supervise and mentor junior engineers, engine cadets, and motormen, ensuring all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
• Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repair activities, inspections, and equipment performance in the ship's engine room logbook and maintenance system.
• Energy Efficiency & Environmental Protection: Support energy efficiency measures on board, identifying opportunities for fuel optimization, waste reduction, and pollution prevention.
• Equipment Calibration & Testing: Conduct testing, calibration, and inspection of engine control systems, sensors, and automated equipment to ensure precision and performance.
• Audit & Inspection Support: Prepare for and support audits, inspections, and surveys carried out by classification societies, port state control, and flag state authorities.

• Coordination with Chief Engineer & Deck Officers: Work closely with the Chief Engineer and deck officers to support overall vessel operations and ensure seamless shipboard coordination.
