Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Observer Shift Leads to join their teams aboard various merchant ships. This leadership role is essential for overseeing observation, data collection, and reporting during assigned shifts. The Observer Shift Lead is responsible for supervising observer operators, ensuring accurate data collection, and maintaining compliance with maritime and environmental regulations. Working closely with the Chief Observer and ship officers, the Shift Lead ensures continuous monitoring of navigational, environmental, and operational data to support shipboard decision-making.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Shift Supervision & Leadership: Lead and oversee the observation team during assigned shifts, ensuring all data collection, monitoring, and reporting tasks are completed accurately and on time.
- Data Collection & Reporting: Supervise the collection of operational, environmental, and navigational data, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of records and reports.
- Bridge Support: Provide real-time observation data to support navigational decisions, including sea state, weather conditions, and traffic monitoring.
- Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Oversee the proper use, calibration, and maintenance of observation instruments, including weather sensors, oceanographic equipment, and monitoring devices.
- Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure observation activities comply with international maritime regulations, environmental protocols (e.g., MARPOL), and company policies.
- Weather Monitoring & Updates: Monitor weather and sea conditions during the shift, providing timely updates to the bridge team and assisting with route adjustments as needed.
- Emergency Response Leadership: Lead observation support during emergency situations, such as man-overboard, collision, or fire, by providing data and reports to the bridge team.
- Environmental Monitoring & Compliance: Ensure data related to ballast water discharge, emissions, and fuel consumption is accurately recorded and reported to support regulatory compliance.
- Logbook & Documentation: Maintain accurate logs of shift activities, incidents, and observation data, supporting regulatory inspections and internal audits.
- Team Training & Mentorship: Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to junior observers, ensuring they follow observation protocols and maintain high data quality standards.
- Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Compliance: Promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship on board, ensuring observation tasks are conducted in line with health, safety, and environmental policies.
Coordination with Ship Officers: Work closely with the Chief Observer, bridge officers, and deck officers to support navigational safety, operational efficiency, and data reporting.
