The Lowdown on the Internet of Things in the Maritime Industry

We’ve talked before about the numerous ways that technology of the future is having an effect on the maritime industry. Over the last couple of years, leaders in the shipping sector have started to see the potential of new marine tech.

So, with ship owners and managers being increasingly prepared to implement processes and solutions that can streamline maritime operations, let’s take a look at two of the things that are helping propel shipping forward so it can embrace future technologies and meet the future head on

What is the IoT and how is it used in the maritime industry?

There is a lot of talk about the Internet of Things, or the IoT as it is often abbreviated to. But what exactly is it? In a nutshell, the IoT is the regular internet - but on steroids. It refers to devices - often everyday devices - that communicate with each other over the internet.

These devices contain hardware such as sensors and electronics, giving them the ability to interact with other objects and be monitored and controlled from afar.

Within the maritime industry, the Internet of Things is being used to facilitate communication between various machines and future technologies, thus increasing the efficiency of shipping processes.

The advantage of this use of marine tech is that downtime is reduced and workflows are streamlined, allowing shipping companies to reduce costs and giving them a competitive advantage.

Automatic Identification and Data Capture

We have already talked about the ways that RFID, or radio frequency identification, is being adopted as a technology of the future to effect change in the maritime industry and so too is AIDC - or automatic identification and data capture - technology.

RFID sensors are now commonplace within the industry, particularly in ports and are enabling ship owners to reduce costs and increase security by capturing data, generating reports, eliminating paperwork and tracking the movement of cargo truck drivers.

Future technologies for greater efficiency

Similarly, AIDC is also providing crucial in increasing efficiency and slashing process times and costs as it provides a way to supply automatic shipping updates throughout the entire process, using both mechanical and handheld scanners. This means being able to identify cargo and capture data will arm shipping companies with valuable information that allows them to make real time decisions.

Everything from a shipment’s whereabouts, the estimated time of a delivery, and even the reasons for a delayed delivery will help organizations run a tighter ship (so to speak!) and be more responsive to customers.

Automatic identification and data capture is also proving to be a huge help now that they are being increasingly employed to assist with analytics. AIDC can be used to analyze existing logistic processes and then suggest other methods for making sure that shipments reach their destinations at their targeted times.
