If you’re a seaman or seawoman who has applied for one or more seafarer jobs through Martide, our shipowners/employers and manning agents can communicate with you about your application, as well as about jobs at sea you are hired for, through our in-built message inbox feature.
When you create an account with Martide you’ll be given your own private inbox which lets you store your seafarer job related messages all in one place.
Showing potential employers that you’re on the ball when it comes to something as simple as replying to messages is crucial. And our inbox has a big part to play in helping you stay organized.
Applying for jobs at sea is like a competition and you need to let shipowners, ship managers and manning agents see that you’re heads and shoulders above your competitors.
We aim to make finding a seafarer job easier than ever and your Martide message inbox is easy to use and really helps with that!
So if you've just registered an account with Martide and want to get the most out of your inbox, here’s the lowdown on using it to make sure you stand out in a crowded job market.
A seafarers guide to Martide's message inbox
First of all, log in to your Martide account. The first page you see will be your User Profile. In the menu on the left hand side, (you might need to scroll down), you will see Messages - just below your name:
Click on Messages and you'll be taken to your inbox. It will look something like this (bearing in mind ours is just an example):
How your inbox is sorted
To make it easier to find the messages or contacts you are looking for and so that you can follow up on your seafarer job applications more easily, your inbox is divided into sections.
The side panel on the left is where you can select which messages to view. It's organized by Jobs, Employer Agent and Manning Agencies:
How to check your messages that relate to Jobs
Click on the little arrows at the left of the companies that are listed under Jobs. This will open up a list of vessels that you have applied to seafarer jobs on:
You can see in our example that we have a (fictional) company called ABC Shipping and our (fictional) seafarer, Bobby Roberts has applied to jobs on (fictional) vessels that they manage called Aardvark, Aardvark II, Black Pearl, Nautilus and Winchester.
The numbers in the little red circles next to some of the vessels indicate how many unread messages Bobby has for each of those vessels.
Now if you:
- Click on a vessel, you will see the messages relating to the job application(s) for that vessel.
- Click on a message, it will show you the message thread.
When you click on a message you will also see a blue/white button above the messages that says Manning Agent / Employer. This lets you switch between messages from manning agents and employers.
Take a look at the image above and on the left you will see:
- The name of the vessel (in our example, Aardvark.)
- The position applied for (in our example, Engine Cadet.)
- The stage of the application (in our example, Negotiation.)
- If you are ex-crew and have worked on that vessel before.
In the middle you'll see the message thread. Our example shows a message the candidate, Bobby Roberts, has sent to a manning agent.
You will also see a blank text box at the bottom of the page - this is where you can type your messages. Add an attachment by clicking the paperclip icon:
Meanwhile on the right hand side you will see information about the company you are messaging, including their contact details:
As well as checking messages related to specific vessels and specific seafarer jobs you have applied to, you can also check, reply to, and send messages that fall under the Employer Agent and Manning Agencies sections. Here's how to do that:
How to check Employer Agent and Manning Agencies messages
Click on one of the companies that's listed under Employer Agent or Manning Agencies:
We've kept our example simple by just listing one company under each section!
When you click on a company, you will see something like this:
Take a look at the image above and here you can:
- See the name of the Employer Agent or Manning Agency on the left (in our example it's ABC Shipping.)
- See the message(s) in the middle.
- See the company's details on the right.
- Send a new message by typing into the text box at the bottom.
- Add an attachment to the message by clicking the paperclip icon.
And that's it - a complete guide to using your Martide message inbox.
